I loved this ending to the Lemonhope saga.
Lemonhope, you have two cupcakes. Finn has no cupcakes. Lemonhope, will you give Finn one of your cupcakes?
I reaaally liked tonight’s episode of Adventure Time! Lemonhope is just the right amount of strange and adorable. Plus he’s the equivalent of a cherub so there’s that <3
But why doesn’t PB sing all the time.
I am really disappointed that people are missing the bigger message in the Lemonhope episodes. Aside from the themes of freedom, tyranny, responsibility, and references to the Icarus parable, these episodes have a very powerful message concerning past abuse/trauma and how people come to deal with it differently.
When Lemonhope decided not to help out around Castle Lemongrab while the “renewed” and solitary Lemongrab healed, it was his way of saying “just because I confronted my painful past doesn’t mean that I have to live in it”. This is important for everyone to understand, not just the citizens of Ooo - if you escape from an abusive life situation, you have absolutely no obligation to return to the people, places, and things that trigger you and bring you down mentally.
Yes, Lemonhope realized from Flannel (AKA PB in disguise) that saving his siblings from abuse at the hands of Lemongrab was the right thing to do, but once they were free, nothing was holding him there anymore. Lemonhope had the freedom to leave it all behind, and he did.
Yes, this broke PB’s heart as she saw him as the “savior” of the lemon people, and her song at the end symbolized how she saw him as a prodigal son, someone who used to shun responsibility but now readily takes it on thanks to her guidance. Of course, Lemonhope saw things differently. He’ll return to his first home when he is damn well ready, and it’s not now.
So yeah, if you have ever been abused, whether by a family member, a spouse/partner, or whoever else, once you break free, there is nothing that should stop you from finding happiness and ridding yourself of years of suffering. Even if it upsets those you love, the bottom line is that YOU have to look out for YOU first. If you want to stay in those places that once held so much negativity, you can, but it’s still YOUR choice. Don’t be afraid of burning bridges if that’s what it takes to start over on a positive kick. Lemonhope did just that, and even if he is unsuccessful on his own like during his first rebellion, at least he isn’t living in fear.
